Israel treats traditional Arab heartlands inside Israel, such as the Galilee, as areas that must be brought under Jewish dominion. This hilltop fortification of homes, glistening in the early morning light, looks like it is in the West Bank. In fact, the settlement, which is part of Jewish Upper Nazareth and admits only former army officers, overlooks the Arab communities of Nazareth and Iksal. (May 2002)
