View of the historic souk in the foreground, including the pencil-thin minaret of the White Mosque and behind it the giant spire of the Basilica of the Annunciation. Surrounding the souk on all sides is modern Nazareth, its size dramatically swollen in 1948 by an influx of mostly Muslim refugee families expelled from their neighbouring villages. The green hill in the far distance is Jabal Qafzeh, or the Mount of Precipice. (August 2004)
