The
familiar turnstiles of a permanent checkpoint, this one at Beit Iba.
Palestinians are allowed through one at a time, and then made to open and
unpack their bags at a distance from the soldiers. Only then can they
approach the booth (on the right of the picture), where soldiers check
their ID papers. Any found on a wanted list -- and the list can include
student activists and men related to someone already in jail -- are
detained. Most young men, fearful that they could be on the list, are
reluctant to use the checkpoints.
