Lifta was built on a ridge overlooking a fertile agricultural valley known as Wadi al-Shalmi. Today Israel is expanding the suburbs of Jerusalem, like the one visible in the background, to create a continuous ring of Jewish communities around the city. The stated goal is the “Judaisation” of the whole of Jerusalem. (April 2003)
