One of the few indications that Ayn al-Zeitoun ever existed is this anonymous building, formerly a mosque, by the side of the road just north of Safed. The village’s 1,000 inhabitants were ethnically cleansed by Palmach forces on 2 May 1948. According to Meron Benvenisti and Benny Morris, the Palmach carried out a massacre of “a few score” men they had captured, a warning to the 10,000 Palestinians in Safed to flee. (August 2005)
