The village of Ghabsiyya, seven miles north-east of Acre,
was ethnically cleansed by Jewish forces on 1 May 1948, two weeks before
Israel’s Declaration of Independence. Its 1,500 inhabitants were displaced
to neighbouring villages and later most were expelled to Lebanon. The sign
at the entrance announces plans to develop a cemetery for Sephardic Jews
on the land, over the village’s original cemetery. The gates shown on the
artist’s impression are marked with the Star of David. (August 2005)
