Most refugees from Umm al-Zinat were forced out of Israel and could not participate in the Nakba procession of May 2006. Salim Fachmawi, 65, an internal refugee who lives nearby, is sitting on the foundations of the primary school, the only trace of the village and its former 250 homes. A week before the march he was called to his local police station to be questioned about his involvement in organising the event.
