The minaret of a mosque transformed into a “feature” on a traffic island in Safed, in the northern Galilee. A total of 10,000 Palestinians fled Safed on May 9 1948, a few days before the establishment of Israel, after watching the destruction of neighbouring Palestinian villages by Jewish militias. Today Safed is a Jewish city. (December 2002)
