Umm al-Fahm, 15 miles south of Nazareth, is one of the largest Arab towns in Israel, home to some 40,000 Arab citizens. However, state-organised confiscation of the town’s surrounding land means that many families that formerly farmed have been forced to keep their animals -- usually goats, sheep and chickens --in their small gardens or in the parking lots under their homes. Such a sight is common in many Arab communities in Israel. (October 2004)
